What is zircon?

Zircon is a natural gemstone, a zirconium silicate mineral that forms in the earth.

Cubic zirconia is a separate, laboratory-made material (zirconium oxide) that shares part of the name.

Most gem zircon is strongly doubly refractive, so when you look through the top of the stone you'll often see the back facet edges doubled, a trait gemmologists use to identify it.

Zircon crystals are also among the oldest known materials on Earth, with tiny grains from the Jack Hills in Western Australia dated to about 4.4 billion years.

Every stone in this collection is cut, polished and ready to set.

Zircon's fire and brilliance

Zircon's high refractive index gives it exceptional brilliance and its strong dispersion splits white light into the flashes of rainbow colour known as fire.

That fire comes close to diamond's, so a well-cut stone sparkles with colour as it moves.

Its very high lustre gives each polished facet a crisp, bright finish.

Our Australian zircon colours

Australia produces more zircon than any other country, most of it from mineral sands.

Gem-quality stones are often found alongside sapphire in the gem fields of Queensland and New South Wales.

Every zircon in this collection is of Australian origin, as stated on each stone's page.

Our current range covers 3 colour families:

The name zircon may come from the Persian word zargun, meaning gold-coloured, which suits our champagne stones beautifully.

All of our Australian zircons are untreated.

Caring for your zircon

Zircon sits at 6 to 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which suits pendants, earrings and rings worn with a little care.

To keep the facet edges crisp, store each piece in its own pouch, apart from harder gems such as sapphire and diamond.

Warm soapy water and a soft brush keep zircon bright.

Gentle hand cleaning suits it better than ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

We're happy to clean and check your piece in the studio as part of our aftercare.

Choosing a zircon gemstone for a ring or pendant

For an engagement ring or everyday ring, we'll guide you towards a setting that frames and protects the stone, such as a bezel or a well-placed claw setting.

Pendants and earrings sit clear of everyday knocks, which makes them a natural home for our larger trillion and freeform stones.

A zircon's price reflects its colour, clarity, cut and carat weight.

Every stone here is listed with its price, weight and cut, so you can compare them easily.

Zircon is a dense gem, so it looks a little smaller than a diamond of the same carat weight.

The millimetre measurements in a listing are the best guide to its size on the hand.

Book a design consultation at our Adelaide CBD or Strathalbyn studio and we'll show you your chosen zircon in hand, in natural light.

From there, Maurice draws up your design for your approval and handcrafts it in our studio, as set out in our custom jewellery design process.
