Jewellery Restoration Story
From Fire Damage to Family Treasure Once Again
At Metal & Stone Jewellers, jewellery restoration is often about far more than repairing a piece of metal and stone. It is about helping preserve the memories and stories that jewellery carries with it.
Recently, we had the privilege of restoring a very special antique brooch for a lovely couple whose home was lost during the devastating Black Summer bushfires of 2019–2020. While clearing the remains of their home, they discovered that several treasured pieces of jewellery had been severely affected by the intense heat.
One piece in particular held deep sentimental value — an antique gold and platinum brooch crafted in the delicate form of a bird’s nest, originally set with two pearls. The heat from the fire had taken a heavy toll. The pearls had completely deteriorated into crumbly debris and the precious metal had become heavily blackened.
Through careful jewellery restoration, Maurice undertook a series of specialised processes to gradually remove the fire damage from the metal while preserving the intricate wirework that formed the nest. Every step required patience and precision to ensure the delicate structure remained intact.
Once the brooch had been restored, two beautiful freshwater pearls were carefully attached to replace the originals, returning balance and life to the piece.
The transformation was remarkable. What once appeared beyond repair was lovingly brought back to life — allowing this cherished heirloom to once again be worn and treasured.
For us, being entrusted with such meaningful pieces is always a great honour.
If you have a family heirloom, antique brooch, ring or piece of sentimental jewellery that needs restoration, we invite you to book a consultation with us in our Adelaide or Strathalbyn studios. Together we can explore how your treasured piece may be carefully restored for the next chapter of its story.

Jewellery Restoration Consultation
Our jewellery restoration service is reserved for special pieces that require careful and detailed work. Restoring antique or sentimental jewellery is often far more involved than a standard repair, as it requires specialised techniques and traditional goldsmithing skills to preserve the integrity and beauty of the piece.
Due to the time and craftsmanship required, Maurice accepts only a limited number of jewellery restoration projects each year. This ensures every piece receives the attention and care it deserves.
Restoration work typically begins from $2,000, depending on the condition of the piece and the processes required.
These consultations are available by appointment at our Strathalbyn studio only. During your visit we will carefully assess your jewellery, discuss the restoration options, and provide guidance on the best way to bring your treasured piece back to life.
