Manfred Lorenz - Master Goldsmith
A Legacy of Traditional Goldsmithing
The story of Metal & Stone Jewellers is deeply connected to the legacy of Maurice’s father, Manfred Lorenz, whose journey began in Berlin, Germany. Trained as a Goldsmith in the traditional European tradition, Manfred mastered the time-honoured techniques of fine jewellery making before seeking adventure abroad. He later migrated to Adelaide, Australia, where his first introduction to the country was working on the South Australian railways. As soon as the opportunity arose, he returned to his true craft and continued his work as a Goldsmith.
Over an extraordinary 67-year career, Manfred became widely respected for his exceptional craftsmanship and award-winning jewellery designs, particularly those featuring Australian opals. He was also one of the founding members of the Goldsmiths Guild of South Australia, helping to support and uphold the standards of traditional goldsmithing in the state. His dedication to craftsmanship and artistry laid the foundation for the skills and values that continue to shape Metal & Stone Jewellers today.

Guild Goldsmith & Diamond Setter
Maurice Lorenz
Maurice Lorenz began his apprenticeship in 1981 under the guidance of his father, Manfred Lorenz, learning the traditional and time-honoured techniques of Goldsmithing from an early age. Over the decades, Maurice has designed and crafted countless pieces of fine jewellery, building a reputation for precision craftsmanship and enduring quality.
Always committed to refining his skills, Maurice expanded into the specialised art of diamond setting and travelled to Antwerp, Belgium — the diamond capital of the world — where he further developed his expertise under renowned master diamond setter Alexandre Sidorov. Maurice’s passion for diamond setting is evident in every piece he creates. He believes jewellery should be not only structurally exceptional but also beautifully refined.
Maurice is the Co-Founder of Metal & Stone Jewellers and serves as the Creative & Technical Director, guiding the design and craftsmanship of every piece created in the studio. He is also a Full Member of the Gold & Silversmiths Guild of Australia, reflecting his commitment to professional excellence and traditional goldsmithing. Maurice brings to the studio an extraordinary depth of skill, knowledge and experience gained from a lifetime dedicated to the art of fine jewellery making.
